Are you trying to get pregnant in your late 30s?

Posted by Minoos Hosseinzadeh on December 16, 2016

This isn’t another depressing or discouraging write-up on how fertility declines in your 30s, so please, read on!

Women in their late 30s can do a variety of things to improve their chances of getting pregnant. The fertility odds are manageable! In fact, 80% of women between 35-39 can become pregnant within a year. To give yourself the best chance for a normal pregnancy and a healthy baby, consider making these lifestyle changes:

  • Don’t drink alcohol – As few as five drinks a week can impair fertility.
  • Cut back on caffeine – Caffeine has been associated with lowered conception rates and increased miscarriages.
  • Eat a balanced diet – Avoid processed and sugar-rich foods. Consider eating organic, hormone-free and pesticide-free foods.
  • Chart your cycle to determine when you are ovulating

Many women who are trying to get pregnant in their late 30s (and even early 40s!) didn’t necessarily want to wait that long; perhaps you were busy experiencing life, met Mr. Right later in life, or wanted to focus on your career before starting a family. Most couples will succeed in conceiving in their 30s, though it most likely will take a bit more time and effort.

In the event that you are unable to get pregnant naturally, IVF (In-Vitro Fertilization) is an excellent fertility option to consider. IVF with chromosome screening helps reduce the risk of miscarriage and chromosomal abnormalities (such as Down syndrome), both of which are higher among women who conceive naturally in their 30s. Pregnancy rates after the transfer of normal embryos can reach 70%!
