What is PGT? Answering this common question about preimplantation genetic testing

Day 3 Embryo Biopsy Day 5 Embryo Biopsy

Many hopeful parents are hearing more about preimplantation genetic testing, but what is PGT? This laboratory technique allows our San Diego fertility center to perform genetic testing on IVF embryos to screen for chromosomal abnormalities and genetic illnesses. The end result is peace of mind for hopeful parents and higher IVF success rates.

What is PGT? It encompasses two types of genetic testing of embryos

Dr. Minoos Hosseinzadeh realizes that it can be stressful to go through an in vitro fertilization cycle and wonder if your embryos are healthy. Our boutique fertility clinic is proud to offer preimplantation genetic screening (PGS) and preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD). Dr. Hosseinzadeh guides patients through every step of these cutting-edge processes.

Both forms of preimplantation genetic testing occur between the steps of fertilization and embryo transfer in an IVF cycle. Our embryologists take a small sample of cells from each embryo. They then freeze the embryos and send the samples to a genetics laboratory for testing.

  • PGS can screen embryos for chromosomal abnormalities, including missing or extra chromosomes. It can also identify translocations, or when part of a chromosome breaks off and reattaches somewhere else.
  • PGD can identify which embryos carry a specific heritable genetic disorder. Some examples include cystic fibrosis, sickle cell disease, muscular dystrophy and Tay-Sachs.

Who needs preimplantation genetic testing?

When hopeful parents visit our San Diego fertility center with questions about PGT, Dr. Hosseinzadeh counsels them to help them decide whether it is a good fit for them. Preimplantation genetic diagnosis is an excellent option for couples who carry or have a heritable genetic disorder that they could pass to their children. As for preimplantation genetic screening, it can be a wise choice for the following groups of patients:

  • Women who have experienced recurrent pregnancy loss
  • Patients who have experienced multiple IVF failures
  • Couples in which the female partner has advanced maternal age.
  • For sex selection
